Understanding how to conduct an accurate and thorough HIPAA Security Risk Analysis
A HIPAA Security Risk Analysis (SRA) is one of the most important (and often misunderstood) parts of an organization’s HIPAA Privacy and Security compliance program. This process is more than simply completing a checklist or identifying a few obvious security concerns. An accurate and thorough SRA requires organizations to understand where electronic protected health information (ePHI) is created, received, maintained, and transmitted; identify potential threats and vulnerabilities; evaluate the likelihood and impact of risks; and use those results to strengthen their security safeguards.
This practical webinar provides a step-by-step approach to completing an SRA that will help improve your organization’s overall security posture. Whether you are conducting your first SRA, updating an existing assessment, or trying to simplify an overly complicated process, this webinar will help you understand what to evaluate and how to document your findings.
Participants will learn how to define the scope of an SRA and identify the systems, applications, devices, facilities, people, and processes that may interact with ePHI. We will explore how to identify reasonably anticipated threats and vulnerabilities, including risks associated with unauthorized access, cyberattacks, lost or stolen devices, system failures, human error, third-party relationships, and physical or environmental hazards.
The webinar will also explore how to evaluate and prioritize risks. Participants will learn practical methods for considering both the likelihood that a threat could result in harm and the potential impact on the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of ePHI. Examples and practical guidance will help participants distinguish between simply listing vulnerabilities and performing an actual risk assessment.
Another important focus will be documentation. A well-documented SRA should demonstrate what was reviewed, how risks were identified and evaluated, what assumptions were made, and when the assessment was performed. Participants will learn what supporting evidence to retain and how to avoid common documentation weaknesses that can make an SRA difficult to defend.
Finally, this webinar will address how the SRA connects to the broader HIPAA Security Rule. Rather than treating the SRA as a standalone compliance exercise, participants will learn how its findings should inform risk management decisions, security policies and procedures, technical safeguards, workforce training, contingency planning, and ongoing security activities.
Whether you are a privacy or security officer, compliance professional, healthcare administrator, IT professional, or a new member of a compliance team, this webinar will provide a practical framework for moving beyond “checking the box” and toward an SRA that genuinely helps protect ePHI and strengthens your organization’s HIPAA compliance program.
