Description
When we hear the word culture we often think of international cultures, and the cultures of race and gender, to name a few. Many of us think cultural awareness is important but is it enough when we think about cultural competence in healthcare? Culture takes on a deeper meaning as described by the American Medical Association.
The American Medical Association describes “Cultural competency in health care…as the ability of systems to provide care to patients with diverse values, beliefs and behaviors, including the tailoring of health care delivery to meet patients' social, cultural and linguistic needs.”
As the AMA’s definition points out, cultural competency is much broader in scope than what we typically think of with the word culture. This webinar will explore what personal knowledge is needed to explore your own awareness about your worldview, about your own culture, and your attitude about cultural differences. Additionally, we will explore what cultural competence means in your healthcare organization, how to establish a system-wide cultural competence strategy, and to determine and minimize any barriers to a successful culturally competent healthcare environment.
